Memorable Books of 2019 on DorothyL

By Theresa de Valence - Posted on 29 December 2019

From December through the end of February, readers of DorothyL listserv posted their favourite books read (for the first time) during 2019 to the DorothyL list.

Our volunteer Allocator read all DL posts and forwarded relevant emails to our volunteer processors (fondly known as Indefatigable Sharpies), each of whom copied, cleaned and pasted data from those emails into an Excel spreadsheet which they then forwarded to me. I did some more data cleansing, and then sent out a cry to the list for volunteers to verify submitted data (copyright dates, titles of books and authors). And this year we provided some opportunity for DorothyL "submitters" to verify the data before it was posted online.

This year we received quite a few non-crime fiction recommendations. Those titles are listed in a separate "non crime fiction" list. Non crime fiction titles are NOT included in the totals on any of these pages.

A great deal of the research was done using Stop You're Killing Me (an exceptional resource for mystery buffs), Fantastic Fiction, WorldCat library catalogue, Wikipedia and other online sites.

Except for my part, the lion's share of the work was done by Nicola Davis (eighth year as Allocator), and the Indefatigable Sharpies (IS): Laurie Brown (eighth year as IS), and Silvia Hoisie (eleventh year as IS). Both Laurie and Silvia did extra research checking data. Our volunteer data checker was Sandra Kisner. Thanks particularly to all those DLers who encouraged other DLers to post their favourite books read last year! Please forgive me if I omitted someone. If you think the gang did a good job, send one person one book. It could be a book which you really enjoyed reading, a new book, or one of your own books.

From the final data, I created pivot tables which produced the information in the pages linked to this one below.
