Memorable Books of 2016 on DorothyL

By Theresa de Valence - Posted on 12 March 2017

From December through the end of February, readers of DorothyL listserv posted their favourite books read (for the first time) during 2016 to the DorothyL list.

Our volunteer Allocator read all DL posts and forwarded relevant emails to our volunteer processors (fondly known as Indefatigable Sharpies), each of whom copied, cleaned and pasted data from those emails into an Excel spreadsheet which they then forwarded to me. I did some more data cleansing, and then sent out a cry to the list for volunteers to verify submitted data (copyright dates, titles of books and authors). And this year we provided some opportunity for DorothyL "submitters" to verify the data before it was posted online.

A great deal of the research was done using Stop You're Killing Me (an exceptional resource for mystery buffs), Fantastic Fiction, WorldCat library catalogue, Wikipedia and other online sites.

Except for my part, the lion's share of the work was done by Nicola Davis (fifth year as Allocator), Patty Andersen (eighth year as Indefatigable Sharpie (IS)), Laurie Brown (fifth year as IS), and Silvia Hoisie (eighth year as IS). Laurie Brown merits special commendation as she has become a nagger par excellence and was single-handedly responsible for many contributions. Del Tinsley provided superb effect. Our volunteer data checker was Sandra Kisner. Theresa Miller helped verify who is/was a DorothyL author based on her 23 years experience! Thanks Ashley McConnell. Please forgive me if I forgot someone. If you think the gang did a good job, send one person one book. It could be a book which you really enjoyed reading, a new book, or one of your own books.

From the final data, I created pivot tables which produced the information in the pages linked to this one below.
